Former Loring Air Force Base

Limestone, Maine

President Clinton kindly closed down the base in 1994, devastating the County.  Limestone is just north & east of Caribou & boarders Grand Falls, New Brunswick.  My friend & I went to the base to say we'd been there, but when we drove around it was dark.  I went back later to take some photos.

This is what's in the base's place.  On right is the entrance to the base.

A map to all the businesses now calling the base home.

There may be businesses here now, but most of the base looks like this....empty.

Look at me!  I'm on the airstrip!  Can't get this close to an airport tower anymore....

If you look real close at the picture, you can see the tip of an airplane tail in the hanger window.

Anyone seen my Humvee?  It's army green....
We originally thought these were abandoned.  When I returned in the daylight I discovered this is a Maine National Guard depot.

Do you have any idea how many empty barracks there are on base?  There are hundreds of houses along the roads in the county just like this - empty and boarded up.  The picture on the right is "The Haven", a hotel that now occupies some space.
